Roses in Pot - The bigger, the better
|
Kalangadoo, 1st April 2025
We have arrived home from attending the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show and we had a wonderful time. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and talk to us. Our rose blooms were in the spotlight and the atmosphere was abuzz with excitement, with lovely comments "look at the colour!" and "such a beautiful fragrance!".
A special thank you to Sandra Turner, President of The National Rose Society and the volunteers from The Rose Society of Victoria who helped with the enormous workload, setting up, answering questions and giving out information, tending to the roses and packing up. We couldn't have done it without them.
The attendance to MIFGS well exceeded last year's numbers, and we will be back again in 2026 with even more varieties to show.
Our FELCO Gift Pack giveaway will be drawn Tuesday afternoon (1st of April) on our Facebook page. Follow us to find out who won!

Bigger pots means bigger roses
|
Many customers are organising their rose order for winter. If you are buying a rose and intending to plant into a pot, we have some tips for you......
1) The bigger the pot, the better! As you can see in the photo below, both roses are the same variety, planted at the same time and in the same potting mix. Watered and fertilised together, as you can see one plant is double the size of the other - and the difference is the pot size. The smaller pot is 26cm high, 30cm wide, and the larger is 40cm high, 45cm wide.
2) Only use potting mix in pots (not soil from the garden as this will set rock hard). The price of the potting mix does matter - the more expensive, the better the quality. Choose a brand that is especially made for roses and with the pH slightly acidic, which the rose will love.
3) In pots this size, water every second day. Don't be scared about 'overwatering' as potting mix will only hold to a full capacity of liquid and the excess will drain away. In very hot weather, water every day. If it is extremely hot weather with scorching winds, you have to move the rose out of the wind or under a shadier spot; this will help protect wind burn/sun burn on the leaves.
4) Don't let the potting mix dry out. Dry potting mix will become hydrophobic and repel water, which will run down the sides of the pots. Therefore you 'think' the rose is watered because water is running out the drain holes - but is the water actually soaking into the root zone?
5) Fertilise your pots with a handful of pellets monthly (water straight after fertilising). A pellet form is better as it releases the nutrients slowly over a couple of weeks. A liquid fertiliser is good for an instant "pick me up" and foliage spray.
6) Change your potting mix every 3 - 4 years to rejuvenate your rose. Do this in wintertime, when the rose is dormant. Remove as much of the old potting mix as you can. Also give the root system a trim and prune the top.
