During our busy week in Melbourne attending the International Flower and Garden Show, we have realised how overwhelming it can be choosing roses for first-time rose gardeners.
"Too many different varieties available!"... "Too many beautiful ones and my space is so small!"... "I don't have much time for my garden, but I want some roses to enjoy - What can I choose?"... The nearly 700 kinds of roses we list in our 2025 Catalogue can be quite a challenge for a person new to roses.
When we talk about roses, we often take for granted that all our readers are experienced with roses and know what to do in their garden; but a popular event like MIFGS brought us back to reality and reminded us of the importance of sharing also basic and essential information, to help our new customers.
So, if you are new to roses and you want to start a garden or a colourful and beautiful corner on your balcony, in this newsletter you will find some useful advice.

Bare Root vs Potted Roses
|
What's the difference between the two, and how to choose? It all depends on when you want your plants and how much you are prepared to spend. Bare root roses, for example, are cheaper than potted roses, but they are available in wintertime only.
|
|
|
|
Bare root roses are young plants lifted from our field in winter, during their dormant season; they arrive to you with no soil, no foliage or flowers, well packed in wet paper to maintain their moisture for weeks. If planted correctly in your garden or in a pot, they will establish quickly and start flourishing in summer.
They can be ordered from November to August, but they will be delivered only from July to August.

Potted roses are more established plants, and they arrive in 20cm square recycled plastic pots, with foliage and often flowers too. They can be replanted in your garden or in a bigger pot all year round, and they make a perfect gift.
They can be ordered and delivered from October to April (we prefer pausing their sale on our website for wintertime, to be able to focus on our busy digging season)

Do you have the right spot?
|
Before ordering roses, check the spot where you are thinking of growing them an follow these basic rules:
- Roses need at least 4-6 hours of sunlight each day.
- They need space around them to grow to their mature size, and they don't like being too close to trees or other vigorous plants.
- The soil of your garden should be pH 6.5; if using a pot, remember to use good quality potting mix.
- Do you have easy access to water? Because your young roses will need generous and constant watering, especially in their first year
of growth.

Now it's time to choose your roses. We have selected for you some very easy to grow varieties, that we know shouldn't be too challenging for a novice rose gardeners. Just select the colour and the shape you like.
