Kalangadoo, 1st December 2025

Is it Summer yet... or are we just dreaming?

The weather here in Kalangadoo has been quite strange and unpredictable lately. With only a handful of warm days to show for spring, it’s hard to believe today marks the start of summer!

We’re eagerly awaiting the sunny weather our plants thrive on. While we wait, we’re busy receiving your bare-root orders, shipping out potted roses across Australia, and preparing for the budding season that we hope will start soon.

Are you ready for summer? Do you know the best ways to keep your roses happy and flourishing?

What your Roses crave most during Summer

The answer is simple: Water. A lot of water, especially if your rose plants are still young.

These are five basic rules for good watering:

  1. A good time to irrigate is first thing in the morning, to avoid the plant holding moisture overnight which has the potential for diseases to develop.
  2. Deep soakings should be at least once a week – up to two hours depending on the rate of application. The following day, get a spade and dig down to spade depth, near a rose plant. Check that it is moist down to that level. If it isn’t, the plant isn’t getting enough water so you will need to increase the number - or duration - of waterings.
  3. If you have a drip irrigation system, be sure to do a visual check on each dripper. They can get clogged with ants, soil and calcium buildup, and need to be regularly maintained to be effective.
  4. Overhead watering is an effective way of irrigating but use a system that throws out large water droplets, because a fine misting system can lose a lot of water through evaporation.
  5. If you are expecting very high temperatures, water deeply the day before, as the day after could be too late.

A piece of South Australian History

We recently visited an amazing garden right outside Adelaide, and we'd like to share some images with you.

The garden belongs to Auchendarroch Housein Mt Barker, a fascinating Heritage listed House built around 1860 and purchased in 2000 by the Wallis family, who also own several cinemas in Adelaide.

The house has got beautiful and well restored rooms featuring William Morris wallpaper, and a big and curated garden displaying many David Austin and Delbard roses.
