Roses truly are the hero of any garden! Their blooms first catch your eye, and then their delightful fragrance enchants your senses. As the saying goes, "Stop and smell the roses"—the soothing aromas can calm your mind and relax your body, offering a natural way to reduce stress and brighten your mood.
Many factors influence a rose's scent, including temperature, humidity, light, and even the time of day. The wonderful fragrance we enjoy comes from hundreds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that evaporate from the petals. Most of the fragrance comes from the petals, except for musk scents, which originate from the stamens and can be even more intense. Roses produce their scents to attract pollinators, who are drawn to the aromas indicating nectar and pollen.
Interestingly, the fragrance can change throughout the day; while the full aroma is strongest in the morning and more pronounced in roses basking in full sun compared to those in partial shade, by evening, some of the stronger notes may fade, giving you a fresh experience.
Additionally, the colour of the rose influences its scent—red and pink roses usually emit the classic, heavy damask scent, while yellow and white roses offer lighter, often fruity or citrusy fragrances.
If you want to enhance your rose's scent, use organic fertilisers such as Sudden Impact and Blood and Bone. Warm sunshine accelerates the releasing of the rose's oils, filling the air with perfume. What a wonderful way to spend the day!
