Elevate Your Garden with Climbing Roses
|
Climbing roses can add a captivating feature to your garden by providing height and color where bush roses can't reach. Unlike bush roses, these varieties grow long 'running' canes that can be wrapped around fences, arches, walls, pillars, or pergolas to create a stunning display. However, these canes need support to climb; otherwise, they will develop
into a large shrub.
Climbing roses vary significantly from one variety to another. You can find short climbing roses as small as 150cm or very large ones that can reach up to 500 cm, with plenty of options in between! For best results, place the long canes in a horizontal position and tie with a soft garden twist tie. Do this while the canes are young and flexible. The sap slows down and tells the buds (at every single leaf junction) to wake up and push
flowering side shoots.
As the climber grows, the branches will thicken so you must loosen the ties or else it will be too restrictive and act like a tourniquet.
