Help your roses survive the hot weather

We are really feeling the heat in Kalangadoo! The skies are clear and we have been experiencing wonderful warm weather on the rose farm. The roses love the sunshine and we have seen an explosion of colour in the fields.
Our budders have been working long days and are nearly finished with the thousands of new roses. As we walk through the rows and rows of roses, we see the reliable favourites of Mr Lincoln, Pope John Paul II and Heaven Scent. We watch with excitement as the new varieties start to bloom and of course the most special roses of all (in Brians eyes) - the old fashioned varieties, each with their own story that can date back hundreds of years.
We truly have something for everyone. Now is the time to plan your roses and find the perfect addition to your garden.

Deep watering is the best answer
|
Deep watering is the key to protecting your roses from extreme heat.
The day before a hot day, make sure you 'deep water' your roses. This involves putting a sprinkler on your garden bed for 2 hours to allow a slow soak of water to reach 30 - 40cm into the ground, where the root system is.
Don't worry about getting the leaves wet - the rose accepts hydration through the leaves as well as the root system.
If unfortunately, you do receive hot north winds and it has crisped the new foliage, wait until the hot day(s) has passed and then trim off the burnt leaves and with deep watering once or twice a week, it will recover.
If you have roses in pots, water everyday throughout summer.

Tips on cutting your roses
|
There are a few things you can do to help your roses last longer in a vase:
- The day before cutting, deeply water the rose bush - Cut the flowers preferably in the morning - Cut the blooms that are in bud form. Make sure the bud is cracked and the sepals are pulled back - Once cut, immediately put into a bucket of water and have the water up to the rose neck. Bring the bucket of roses inside and leave in a cool place - Prepare your vase: fill with water and add sugar (1L = 1 tablespoon). Stir and dissolve. - Add 1 drop of bleach per Litre to stop bacteria breeding - Pick the roses from the bucket, re-snip the end on an angle, strip leaves that would sit under the water line and arrange as you like it - Place the vase out of direct sunlight and change the water every day; you can re-cut the stems to help the take up water
Enjoy!

"Last Chance Roses" are selling out fast
|
Don't forget to check our "Last Chance" collection! You could find something really special that won't be available any longer. For different reasons, this year we had to delete from our list several varieties - many of these from David Austin collection. As we still have some plants in the field for these discontinued varieties, they will be sold online until stock lasts and then permanently removed from our catalogue.
Our "Last Chance" collection will give you the opportunity to have these varieties before they disappear from the Australian market. So, what are you waiting for? Have a look at our collection! We are sure you'll find something special for your garden.
