Kalangadoo, 1st June 2024
With our frosty mornings being around zero degrees temperature, we can definitely say Winter is here! Even if sometimes it could be unpleasant working in the field, chilly nights and frosts are good for our roses, because they harden the new growth on the roses and make stronger plants.
We have just finished digging out all 2-year-old plants, and we'll now concentrate on other important jobs in the field, like planting new rootstock for next year's crop and organise the watering system for the new growing areas. Then, we'll start lifting standards and yearlings and keep going with our busy season. Hopefully some rain will come soon, because if it's easier for us working without it, we understand how difficult is becoming for all our neighbors and their farms.
Just a quick reminder that there are still many bare root plants available on our website - Place your order today for your delivery between July and August.

Best companion plants for your rose garden
|
Roses need companion plants growing close to them not only to be seen at their best all year round, but also to better control pests and diseases. For instance, Alliums repel aphids, weevils, borers and moles, Marigolds help repel harmful nematodes and Geraniums repel Japanese beetles, aphids and other rose pests. There is a wide range of companion plants that will bring out the best qualities of your roses and share their space with a serene balance. Make sure you select any ornamental grasses, perennials, annuals or shrubs that have the same growing requirements as your roses: full sun, well-drained soil and regular fertilization and pesticide treatments to promote new blooms. Companion plants should be planted at least 30 cm away from your roses so that their roots are not disturbed and a good air circulation between plants is guaranteed. Hedges of Rosemary officinalis or either the English Box or Japanese Box are a great way of highlighting your roses with a formal edge but then underplanting something a little more floral behind the hedge. For instance, a Box Hedge with Catmint or Lamb's Ear planted behind it. Russian Sage, Verbena Polaris, Moroccan Daisies and Siberian Chives can be other good rose companions for your garden. We also suggest Lavandula Dentata
(French Lavender): it looks good nearby or as a hedge as this is a lavender that can grow in sandy soils to heavy soils. It also flowers all year round and with a bit of smart hard hedging - pruning to 50cm at the end of February - can result in a stunning flowering hedge of Lavender right through winter when the roses are dormant. This makes a perfect complimentary plant as it lifts up an otherwise dormant part of the garden.
