About Us

Kalangadoo, 14th July 2024

Days are getting a little bit longer, and we have just started another important chapter of our busy winter season - the final one, and certainly our favourite: the preparation of the plants to fulfil the thousands of retail orders received through our website since last October.

All plants have been carefully graded and selected, individually labelled and organised in alphabetical order for an easier picking when they'll be boxed and despatched.

In the next few days we'll start delivering the first rose plants, following a chronological order - If you placed your order with us last October or November, for instance, you will be within the first ones to receive your roses; if you place an order now, you will receive your roses around mid-late August.

In any case, there is still time to purchase new roses if you haven't done yet, and you can do it online, or contacting us - Kelly and Olivia will be happy to answer your questions and help you to choose.

Remove sucker growth from your roses

We already mentioned the importance of pruning your roses now, during the coldest days of the year – a topic that attracts many advice columns! However, there’s another process that’s also important to do at the same time, and that’s removing rootstock - or sucker growth - from the base of your rose plants.

Most garden roses have been budded onto a vigorous rootstock system. While this is the most effective way of ensuring strong healthy ‘cultivated’ roses, it can occasionally result in suckers also growing from the base of the plant. Unless removed, they will soon rob the cultivated rose from its essential nutrients and eventually take over the whole plant.

Rootstock generally throws out long runner canes from the base of the plant.

It’s an easy process to remove them, but it’s not just a matter of cutting them off. You need to dig down to where the sucker starts breaking from the plant.

After you removed it by deeply cutting it off, leave the base of the plant exposed for a few months to make sure the sucker doesn't re-shoot; if it does cut it off again harder, otherwise backfill with soil.

To find out how to remove rootstock, head to Brian’s explanation in the video below.

Vive la France!

July 14th is an iconic date for France, commemorating the fall of the Bastille and the start of the French Revolution back in 1789; so, today we want to speak French and say "Vive la France!" with some of its beautiful roses, created by two well-known French rose breeders - Georges Delbard and Meilland.

We grow and sell many of their roses, and these are some of our favourites still in stock.

France Libre
